Cerulean Warbler Surveys

Cerulean Warblers are neotropical migrants, wintering in the Andean mountain forests as far south as Peru. They are considered one of the rarest nesting warblers in Iowa. The Effigy Mounds/Yellow River Forest BCA in northeast Iowa has been discovered to harbor a significant population of breeding Cerulean Warblers.

Red-shouldered Hawk Surveys

Red-shouldered Hawks inhabit wetland and upland forests throughout the eastern United States and southern Canada. Their population is recovering since a steep decline in the 1920s to '30s. Elusive and secretive, they are seldom seen But their distinctive piercing calls can be heard on their territories during courtship and nesting. The steep slopes and backwater sloughs of northeast Iowa's Driftless Area claim a consistent population of this hawk.

Raptor Migration Banding

The ridges and bluff tops along the Mississippi Flyway is a prime area to wittness raptors making their way from summer breeding habitats in the far north to wintering destinations. Some migration routes extend from the Arctic to South America. Sunny days with northwest winds from mid-September to mid-December offer the best chance of large numbers of birds.
